Hey guys this is a follow up to Gunedens Soul Calibur Review a couple of days ago. I’ll only be briefly covering gameplay so please do look at his review for more insight. As an aside, all images were taken by my camera phone of the Xbox 360 limited edition. (sorry for the shoddy quality of some these images)

So with Soul Calibur 4 out and selling on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360, many people might wonder what are the actual differences between the two versions. Well evidently there are none! The one real difference is the controllers, so please buy the controller that feels most comfortable to you because this game WILL make your hands hurt (that is if you are lucky enough to own both consoles you rich slobs :P ). Where there really is a difference though is the premium vs. regular edition of this game. So without further ado I’ll list out the bonuses included with the premium version of soul calibur 4.

premium package content (my wallet not included)
  • Regular edition of Soul Calibur 4
  • Tin Box to hold all the content (which i personally find quite nice at least compared to the disappointing halo limited edition)
  • T-shirt of Yoda and Siegfried with a small permanent marker (far left still in package)
  • Redeem code for extra Create a soul (CaS) parts
  • Artbook w/ comic (good quality but disappointing content)
  • Poster

All this for a grand total of 79.99 regular price (CAD)! I personally got it at futureshop on sale so it was only 10 dollars more than the regular edition. Realistically though I don’t think this package is worth the extra money for anyone but the most devoted of SC4 fans since the bonus content IS kind of lacking. The artbook is of really nice quality (glossy plastic) and the redeem code for bonus content is a plus, but other than that the t-shirt and poster is useless (well for me at least). Overall i’m happy to have gotten the package for only $10 more furthered by the fact the availability of the premium appears to be somewhat sparse (unlike ehem the halo limited edition)(They didn’t even have the premium edition on the shelves, the employees had to check the back to see if there were any remaining). I recommend to anyone new to the series or not interested in the artbook/CaS content, to steer clear of the premium package and just get the regular instead. And of course you get to save money too!

(Unless if you’re a pedo and like seeing your female characters in schoolgirl outfits!)

Pros

  • Online: The most important reason this sequel is even justified. There hasn’t been a fighting game that has gotten online play right until SC4 showed up. Sure DOA4, Tekken, and Virtua fighter offered it but they were either lagfests or the interface was handled too confusingly. SC4 takes online fighting games to new levels, offering a very simple interface (live ->Ranked/player game->Quickmatch -> done) and relatively lagfree gameplay (6 matches played and only 1 that lagged). Also there is the option to bring your own CaS characters online offering some of the most entertaining matches i’ve seen (Obama vs. McCain, R-kelly vs. Michael Jackson, and Hitler vs. Bald Eagle!). Not to mention being able to use special vs. and bring your own personal favorite character with your customzed stats and abilities vs. others online! This is THE mode that keeps SC4 entertaining, there is no point to even buying the game if you don’t play online! I suggest you stick with previous iterations of the series because online practically makes the game since the single player options this time around is so lacking. It’s not without problems though since I keep getting this screen whiletryng to join a game:
MOST FRUSTRATING THING EVAR!

MOST FRUSTRATING THING EVAR!

  • Armor system: Personally my favorite new edition to gameplay since well… 8 way run. All fighting games should include this. Not only does it serve as eyecandy when you break a females armor :P , it also adds a new layer of depth into fights. If you keep attacking the same level on your oppenent (High, mid, low) their armor will eventually break. This opens them up to more damage everytime you attack their armorless weak spot. (HIT IT’S WEAKSPOT FOR MASSIVE DAMAGE!)
  • CaS (create characters): Not much I can say here other than it is a majorly buffed up version of create a character mode from SC3. There are a whole lot more options this them around (breast size ehem) not to mention added abilities and stats. You can also fully customize the armor of your favorite characters, finally letting you put your female characters in even skimpier clothes (or at least for me to pimp kilik’s armor :P ).

Cons

  • Roster: dissapointing overall, Two actual new characters (algol and hilde (No I don’t consider Yoda or the apprentice to be real characters part of the SC4 series ><). The returning characters are mostly unchanged with the significant exception of Ivy. Of course people on online messgae boards are already saying some characters are overpowered (siegfried, nightmare, kilik, cervantes, maxi, yoda, mitsurugi) and I expect these people to name the entire roster to be overpowered in a couple more weeks -.- (god people! Whose the actual noob? the guy who spams 1-2 moves or the guy who can’t even guard impact/counter them). However the option to use your own character redeems it overall.
hmmm.. i wonder wht tht empty space beside yoda is (ehem vader dl content)
hmmm.. i wonder wht tht empty space beside yoda is (ehem vader dl content)
  • DL content: Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of buying more content for games to prolong it’s life but sometimes it gets ridiculous. This game already has more than over 3000 microsoft points available to be spent on the marketplace. With more ~content~ on the way (cough vader cough) and armor parts for CaS, I kind of wished the days where the game was more or less complete out of the box were back.
  • Single Player: The most dissapointing part of the game, the story mode consists of 5 stages and the most incoherent and nonsensical plot in the entire franchise series. In factI don’t even know the premise or conclusion after playing through with half the characters. In my mind, i’ll just consider SC3 to be the latest itereation of the story :) Also they took out chronicle of the sword mode, the board strategy mode of the third game and included a tower mode where you just fight random characters as you ascend or descend the tower. I really wish they would bring back the map battle thing from SC2 which I consider to be the best single player mode of any fighting game period.

Overall I’m happy with the game, extremely liking the CaS mode and Online yet dissapointed by single player. I’d recommend it to anyone who plays Soul Calibur actively with friends but your gameplay will be extremely limited if you don’t play with others. Steer clear if all you do is play by yourself since this game is NOT for that kind of experience. I end with Mitsurugi’s fine words:

Save the formalities, LETS FIGHTOO!!!!

PS: If you managed to get to then end of my first full game review props to you! Heres a treat!

Thans to these awesome translators source!! Comments and Suggestions are once again much appreciated!

  1. Edit: Online really pisses me off… momentary lag (costs a battle), serious business from other players, etc. I guess I’ll eventually get used to it – maybe.

  2. so softcore hentai is bundled with the collectors edition?

  3. Online gets gay cause of spammers of long range expecially kilik that fucker is so hard to hit he can do the same move and u get raped every single time u have to gaurd perfect and barley advance each time. Then on top of that one u get close he can grab u unexpetedly and get farther back again. so kilik and spammer combo is faggit fuck shit.

  4. name ment to be kilik

  5. Nice write-up.
