Penny Arcade! Video games! Lots of free stuff! I was looking forward to the free stuff actually, but it was awesome all the same. Some of the blog members and I went down to Seattle last Friday to check it out – and having

Rift is an MMO that looks like Tera, another MMO, which looks like Aion, which looks like Guild Wars, which is a knock-off of WoW. Original game is original

traveled for the first time in years, I was pretty stoked. We only stayed for the day, which sucks since there was so much to do there. All the big name booths had 2 hour+ line ups including the Guild Wars 2 booth (was it worth it Gabe?). Some booths were apparently unsupervised *cough* Brink *cough* so we ended up waiting a solid hour in the line up that only moved because people rage quit waiting. This is probably the case when the same four guys from an hour ago are still playing the “timed” demo. On the other hand, we did get to play Killzone 3 multiplayer. The lines there were more forgiving, taking 16 players at a time. But being a Halo fanboy, the seemingly awkward positioning of the PS3 analog sticks made it bloody hard to control. There were also some cosplayers out and about but most of them were terrible. The only good ones were the models paid to stand at their respective booth and look pretty. I did however take a few videos (in HD!) of some demos and craziness in general, some of which you can enjoy here:

Bottom Line: We shoulda fucking stayed for all 3 days.

all the same grindfest to me.

I will admit that they are are grindy, especially the eastern games.

Even guild wars (in which arenanet doesn’t promote grindyness) has grindy elements

but honestly, what MMO that is already out doesn’t have grinding it’s part of the genre at this point.

MMO’s distinguish themselves in other ways or they fail, or in the case of GW2 they try to get rid of the grinding and add a bunch of other elements on top.

and to answer your question Mithril, I both am and am not a newbster. I haven’t been very lively in blog communities outside of WoW but I’ve played WoW and Guild Wars both for the past 5 years.

lol he is referring to a mutual friend of ours that is a guild wars fan. The problem I have with MMOs is not really how it looks or plays, but the time it takes to really do anything.

In the case of WoW, depending on the class/race your character is forced to walk a million miles to each quest location until level 40 or 60 when you can finally get a freakin horse. And the real benefits of pvp, raids, etc. don’t show until you hit the higher levels. GW I understand is less on leveling and more on pvp, but being an MMO it still takes a lot of time grinding or questing.

In the end, it all feels drab and boring and I just stop caring.

lol holy crap, someone else actually reads the blog.

anyways; if you think WoW is grindy, you havent played MMO’s brahs

WoW been transformed to catered to the casual crowd, not designed for the hardcore gamers who can devote X amount of hours per week on the game.

Different people, different cups of tea. I personally find FPS terribly boring after the arcade rush wears off :<
