Penny Arcade! Video games! Lots of free stuff! I was looking forward to the free stuff actually, but it was awesome all the same. Some of the blog members and I went down to Seattle last Friday to check it out – and having

Rift is an MMO that looks like Tera, another MMO, which looks like Aion, which looks like Guild Wars, which is a knock-off of WoW. Original game is original
traveled for the first time in years, I was pretty stoked. We only stayed for the day, which sucks since there was so much to do there. All the big name booths had 2 hour+ line ups including the Guild Wars 2 booth (was it worth it Gabe?). Some booths were apparently unsupervised *cough* Brink *cough* so we ended up waiting a solid hour in the line up that only moved because people rage quit waiting. This is probably the case when the same four guys from an hour ago are still playing the “timed” demo. On the other hand, we did get to play Killzone 3 multiplayer. The lines there were more forgiving, taking 16 players at a time. But being a Halo fanboy, the seemingly awkward positioning of the PS3 analog sticks made it bloody hard to control. There were also some cosplayers out and about but most of them were terrible. The only good ones were the models paid to stand at their respective booth and look pretty. I did however take a few videos (in HD!) of some demos and craziness in general, some of which you can enjoy here:
Bottom Line: We shoulda fucking stayed for all 3 days.
“Extremely dangerous is an understatement” June 11, 2010

Yesterday, Wicked Lasers – a company known for its high-powered lasers – has added a new laser to their arsenal: the Spyder III Pro Arctic Series. Manufactured by harvesting the blue laser diode from a Casio home theatre laser projector, this handheld device pumps out a 445nm blue-coloured beam peaking at 1000mW of power. To put this into perspective, a 100mW laser is capable of igniting a match in seconds and burning through plastic; more powerful lasers can burn through wood and could instantly and permanently blind you. Since this is a Class 4 laser, it does all of the above and can easily start fires or burn human skin.
Just check out their warning:
Warning: Extremely dangerous is an understatement to the power of 1W of laser power. It will blind permanently and instantly and set fire quickly to skin and other body parts, use with extreme caution and only when using the included eye protection. Customers will be required to completely read and agree to our Class IV Laser Hazard Acknowledgment Form.
Obviously, using lasers of this kind is serious business. All this is available for a modest price of $200 US (compared to their regular $3000 Spyder III Pro) while still being the most powerful laser they have. Lately I’ve been into owning lasers, especially higher-power lasers but this is just ludicrous. If you’re interested in attaching these to sharks’ heads for plans of world domination, check out the safety guidelines first.
Thinking of getting an iPhone? June 9, 2010

I know mithril is. Well, good news if you’re Canadian (and I’m automatically assuming you are with any one of the Big 3): these flashy new toys will be available to Bell, Telus, and Rogers customers sometime in July. If you’ve been following any respective tech blog recently – ie not us – you already know all about it, but since we are a tech/gaming/random blog here is a breakdown of what to expect:

- same sized 3.5″ screen but with a higher (and more pixel dense) 960×640 resolution display
- 802.11b/g/n Wifi
- 720p video recording at 30 fps
- faster processor
- 5 mp camera w/ flash, front facing camera
These were the only notable specs, and they are looking pretty good. I am actually considering taking the dive for this phone. Before I garner the wrath of an Apple hater, allow me to justify that Bell Mobility (my current provider) doesn’t have anything better coming out in the next year or so; if I had my way, I would get my hands on an HTC Evo 4G… but alas, no dice. I blame Canadian wireless carriers for the lack of an über-fast WiMax network and any real competition so far. So, if there are any readers of our blog besides the bloggers themselves, I now ask YOU: would you get the new iPhone?

*Update: The current phase of the beta will be extended to Monday June 7, 2010 from May 31, 2010. One more week of awesomeness wooot!
Zomg. I got a beta key today. But just as I got into a game, the servers shut down and kicked me out 15 minutes in while giving me constant reminders that “The system will shut down in X minutes”. RAAGGGEEE. Apparently this is how blizzard uploads patches… Anyway, a recent patch made it possible to play super awesome custom user maps on multiplayer, so that means you can play tower defense, cat n mouse, and a whole bunch more that I don’t remember right now (can’t wait for Simpsons, golems, and cannon defense
). Speaking of custom maps, the included galaxy editor (that was made available in an earlier patch) is quite comprehensive and complex, allowing you to do a lot of cool stuff. It’s so cool, I can almost forgive the decade long development process and the fact that it should be all one game, not part of a trilogy. Nonetheless, its still awesome and I will probably take July 26th off to wait in line with all the other fanbois.

Isn’t it? Well anyway, now that we’re posting stuff again expect plenty of more posts on milfs technology. This means we’ll have twice the fanboyism, twice the trolling, and twice the hotlinking! This post is 5 days late, but whatevs.
In other [old] news, Canonical released a new version of Ubuntu Linux codenamed Lucid Lynx which was made available for download on April 29, 2010. I had the chance to install it on an old computer lying around and the results were surprising, to say the least. On a Pentium 4 with 512MB RAM, it manages to boot up in under a minute (37 seconds to be exact :O). The user interface looks really Mac-like, which actually looks pretty sharp IMO.
I’m not well versed in Linux, so getting video card drivers has been a royal pain in the ass and flash websites are sloooooowwww, probably because of these drivers. Overall, it’s pretty good though since my aging, prone-to-overheating computer still runs quite well. Good enough for me I guess.
Laptops that smell? September 6, 2008

Anyway, back to some non-Milf posts:
Laptops today have a plethora of features, ranging from fingerprint readers and webcams to 7 second boot times, with the newest enticing your sense of smell. Asus has released its new F6V series of laptops which has one of several scents on the lid. There are four scents available: grass, ocean, floral, and cologne (?!) as well as a variety of colours. The specifications include an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB RAM, ATI HD 3470 graphics, and Wireless-N networking making the F6V a pretty well-rounded laptop. As for the olfactory feature, I don’t see any possible use for it on a laptop – unless you’re looking to attract women, which probably wouldn’t work anyway. The designs are still pretty cool so if you’re interested check it out here.
George Carlin and Religious GEARS!! August 23, 2008

As you probably already know, the American comedian George Carlin is dead. I say ‘dead’ and not ‘passed away’ because Carlin was someone who hated the use of euphemisms. He was a controversial comedian with material ranging from politics to religion, and many other taboo subjects. In addition to various Grammy awards and Comedy awards, he is also the honouree of the 2008 Mark Twain Prize for American Humour. As an atheist, I find most of his jokes on religion logical, realistic, and hilarious. What he says makes complete sense: for example, how can we believe in something we cannot see, hear, smell, feel, or detect in any way? And what exactly does this “god” do? Having watched some of Carlin’s work on Youtube, I’ve noticed that there’s always a fuckload of comments from theists and atheists butting heads. What I find funny is that all these theists are really fucking pissed off at this guy, saying he should die, eat shit, burn in hell….etc. but, aren’t these same theists believers of god? As such, shouldn’t they not spew hate/rage at their fellow man just for expressing his freedom of speech? It’s a little contradictory since religion is supposed to promote good conduct and not “this fucker should die because he does not believe what I believe”.
On a similar note, I happened to find this while browsing the web. I do agree that an idiot who actually claimed that god told him to invade AH-RACK does not deserve to be a president, but the fact that he is a “bad” christian does not make sense. How and why would there be a ‘bad’ christian? Correct me if I’m wrong, but christians have all accepted god (or was it ‘Jesus’?) as their saviour and god loves everyone… including these ‘bad’ christians. If all christians believe in god, then god would love them no matter how different they are.
After browsing a bit more, I found something interesting. But since it’s 2 AM and I have work in the morning, all I will mention is that this Donnie Davies fellow thinks being gay is bad.
D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Router Review August 20, 2008

After owning this router for an entire two days, I felt that I should do a little review on it. I picked this up at a local Best Buy for $95 and it’s the best damn purchase I’ve made in a long time. It was a welcome replacement for my now-dead Netgear WGT624 (Netgear = massive shit fail) and boasts several new features. First off, some specs and pics:
Wireless standards: 802.11b/g, Draft-2.0 802.11n
Bandwidth: 2.4GHz
Security: WEP, WPA, WPA2, NAT
Notable Features: 4-port Gigabit switch, 1 USB port (to transfer wireless settings), “Intelligent” QoS (Quality of Service), lots of router settings, 3 removable antennae, wall mountable
Although the included CD was pointless, the initial setup was quite simple – I had my network up and running in a few minutes. The only annoyance I found was that I couldn’t access the web-interface router settings through Firefox 3, but Internet Explorer 7 (boo) worked fine.
This router is one of the fastest Draft-N routers around, providing better data throughput than its competitors (D-Link even goes as far as mentioning this claim on the retail box). Having been hooked up to a fast ethernet router till now, my internet connection actually seems deserving of its name (Shaw XTREME cable); after setting everything up, I noticed a great increase in wireless speed. My wireless downloads are now as fast as my wired downloads (10 Mbit/s or about 1250 KB/s).
The new security features and the plethora of settings are a nice bonus too; with support for WPA, WPA2, and even the breakable WEP encryption (not really a plus), this is as safe as it gets for most consumers. I’ve always felt the WPA on my Netgear was pretty safe, but using WPA2 made me feel that much safer.
Another feature – which I have yet to test – is the Intelligent QoS technology. Typical QoS features on other routers prioritize packets of data (for wired connections only) for different applications so one person on the network can browse the web without lagging the hell out of another’s Unreal Tournament 3 game. The D-Link version of this can use QoS on wireless devices, and has more advanced settings.
Of all the great features in this router, the USB port is almost damn useless. Its only apparent function is to transfer wireless settings to another computer via flash drive. No printer support, no external storage support. D:
So, there you have it. For $95 I think it’s a pretty good deal but then again, I’ve only had it for two days.
Leo Laporte: Tech Guru or Poser? August 5, 2008

I’ve recently watched a tv show called The Lab with Leo Laporte on G4 Tech TV (I don’t have this channel at home just so you know) and after watching the show it made me wonder the title of this post. At first glance, this guy, Leo Laporte (apparently a pretty well-known tech personality), seemed to be a generic tech guru who happens to have his own tv show; the show I watched was about backing up data. It was filmed in a studio on a counter where there were four different external hard drives and some other guy was explaining to him the features of each hard drive. The guy basically explained storage capacities and the different ports available – while Laporte just stood there nodding and occasionally adding ambiguous remarks like, “that’s interesting” and others. But if this self-proclaimed techie really is a tech guru, why doesn’t he present the hardware himself? This question answered itself the moment I heard him say something along the lines of, “…I have one of these with my Mac at home and it just works”. Not only that, he just plain doesn’t seem to know what he’s talking about – near the end of the show, a girl in their studio demonstrated a backup (on a Mac, of course) at which point this Laporte guy kept talking about how backups are important and that if you get a virus you could lose your data – all those obvious facts that anyone with at least some computing history would know. If you’ve noticed, the show has been cancelled as stated on their website. I don’t know if you consider him a tech personality, but from what I’ve seen on his “tech” show, he’s about as techie as my mom (who is often troubled by the simplest of problems, on a MAC)
