As you probably already know, the American comedian George Carlin is dead. I say ‘dead’ and not ‘passed away’ because Carlin was someone who hated the use of euphemisms. He was a controversial comedian with material ranging from politics to religion, and many other taboo subjects. In addition to various Grammy awards and Comedy awards, he is also the honouree of the 2008 Mark Twain Prize for American Humour. As an atheist, I find most of his jokes on religion logical, realistic, and hilarious. What he says makes complete sense: for example, how can we believe in something we cannot see, hear, smell, feel, or detect in any way? And what exactly does this “god” do? Having watched some of Carlin’s work on Youtube, I’ve noticed that there’s always a fuckload of comments from theists and atheists butting heads. What I find funny is that all these theists are really fucking pissed off at this guy, saying he should die, eat shit, burn in hell….etc. but, aren’t these same theists believers of god? As such, shouldn’t they not spew hate/rage at their fellow man just for expressing his freedom of speech? It’s a little contradictory since religion is supposed to promote good conduct and not “this fucker should die because he does not believe what I believe”.
On a similar note, I happened to find this while browsing the web. I do agree that an idiot who actually claimed that god told him to invade AH-RACK does not deserve to be a president, but the fact that he is a “bad” christian does not make sense. How and why would there be a ‘bad’ christian? Correct me if I’m wrong, but christians have all accepted god (or was it ‘Jesus’?) as their saviour and god loves everyone… including these ‘bad’ christians. If all christians believe in god, then god would love them no matter how different they are.
After browsing a bit more, I found something interesting. But since it’s 2 AM and I have work in the morning, all I will mention is that this Donnie Davies fellow thinks being gay is bad.
I’ve recently watched a tv show called The Lab with Leo Laporte on G4 Tech TV (I don’t have this channel at home just so you know) and after watching the show it made me wonder the title of this post. At first glance, this guy, Leo Laporte (apparently a pretty well-known tech personality), seemed to be a generic tech guru who happens to have his own tv show; the show I watched was about backing up data. It was filmed in a studio on a counter where there were four different external hard drives and some other guy was explaining to him the features of each hard drive. The guy basically explained storage capacities and the different ports available – while Laporte just stood there nodding and occasionally adding ambiguous remarks like, “that’s interesting” and others. But if this self-proclaimed techie really is a tech guru, why doesn’t he present the hardware himself? This question answered itself the moment I heard him say something along the lines of, “…I have one of these with my Mac at home and it just works”. Not only that, he just plain doesn’t seem to know what he’s talking about – near the end of the show, a girl in their studio demonstrated a backup (on a Mac, of course) at which point this Laporte guy kept talking about how backups are important and that if you get a virus you could lose your data – all those obvious facts that anyone with at least some computing history would know. If you’ve noticed, the show has been cancelled as stated on their website. I don’t know if you consider him a tech personality, but from what I’ve seen on his “tech” show, he’s about as techie as my mom (who is often troubled by the simplest of problems, on a MAC)
So… Soul Calibur 4 has been released today. Having owned Soul Calibur 2 and 3 (not the first games; my gaming history is not that long), I’ve come to know and love the characters and gameplay of this franchise. I’ve played some other fighting games such as Tekken, Dead or Alive, and Virtua Fighter, but none come close to Soul Calibur in my opinion (Tekken = PS3 Exclusive; DoA = frustrating; VF = wtf complicated). Although the newest iteration of Soul Calibur is packed with goodies, the most surprising upgrades I’ve noticed are the characters themselves – especially the females. Ivy Valentine, for example, is the notorious chain-whip-wielding character whose top-heavy figure would put a porn star to shame. That was in Soul Calibur 2 and 3. Now, Namco (the developer) has decided that her chest was too small and ballooned the size of her D-cups to a… well, I don’t know bra sizes too well but they’re pretty damn big. The same goes for other characters Taki, Setsuka, etc. who have also undergone miraculous transformations – since when did plastic surgeons exist hundreds of years ago?
Personally, I don’t mind a few tweaks here and there, but these boob jobs seem a little impractical given how much these characters move and jump around (extreme breast physics?) but in the end, we all know that sex sells. I still haven’t played the new game however, so my opinion on this matter may change later on
Randy Pausch died yesterday, finally succumbing to his terminal pancreatic cancer peacefully in his own home. For those who do not know him, he was a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon. He helped bridge the departments of computer science and arts, bringing the age of virual realities and designs that we see today. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2006. After he was diagnosed, he gave his famous “last” lecture, a very motivating and enlightening speech about all facets of life. Even if you arn’t interested in computer science, I encourage everyone to listen to him and hopefully take something significant away from it.
…till I become 18. It got me thinking, what can I do in a few hours that I can’t do now? Well, I can vote – but I don’t recall there being an election of any sort anytime soon; I can gamble (whoopie -_-); I can enter those 18-or-older contests – none of which seemed unsuitable for minors; I can also watch porn (o rly?); I can get my own credit card (don’t want to deal with the fucking ridiculous interest rates yet). I’m still one year away from the legal drinking age, have yet to attain at least a Novice Driver’s License, and on the brink of entering the apparently difficult first year of university…it’s not that amazing if you ask me. So I ask you, what else is there to do? Comments plz.
With my recent discovery of Amd’s stock at an all time low of 4.56$ USD a share, i was flummoxed at how this could be! Then I was reminded of how “analysts” are the worst. These people, are the ones who pretty much dictate whether a company’s stock will rise or fall. As soon as some “analyst” lowered AMD’s target to 5$ instead of 8$, AMD’s stock fell dramatically. (which reminds me of the show Dilbert). This is as far as I know, please correct me if I am wrong. In addition, I am most likely over simplifying the problem; but thats not of your concern. After their +5bill usd acquisition of ATi, AMD has been heading down a dark path. Their Phenom processors turned out to be less than phenomenal, the major TLB fiasco, massive layoffs and debt, their future looks exceptionally grim. Hector Ruiz also seems to be a very incapable CEO, he has been talking about Asset Light restructuring for awhile now, and none of the investors have yet to see the fruit of his work. I recently bought a new laptop to bring back with me on my vacation and for university, the TX2524CA tablet running AMD / ATi <3 . Anyway, the basis of my plan for keeping in touch with the western civilization was based on the assumption that everyone in Taiwan had unsecured internet. I was right about 5 years ago, when my brother brought a laptop back. Back then, everyone did in fact have unsecured connections. I could randomly turn my laptop on at the side of a busy road and get about 15unsecured Wifi connections.
Wow, this blog is already 1 week old and I haven’t gotten around to update the site with any major content. Since I’ve been busy this entire week I haven’t gotten around to play any new games or watch movies. Next week looks even more hectic but hopefully I’ll be able to find some time to get this blog in order (especially after gentek’s little “departing” raid). Weekly Gears is a continuously evolving segment and because I didn’t play/watch any games this week, instead I’ll post interesting news around the tech/gaming industry.
DX 11 announced, DX 10.1 sinkshttp://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/38362/98/ : ATI fanboys am cry, DX 10.1 is the past and I for one welcome our new DX 11 overlords. Nvidia actually made a smart decision here to not support the dx 10.1 in their next gen cards (GTX260/80)
Nvidia stumblesSource : Wow gentek is going to have a field day with this, hopefully anyone using NV’s mobile GPU’s will be fine. My go7600 is still going strong after almost a yr and a half so I’m still a happy customer.Apparently this problem affects mainly the go 8 series.
Welcome to the section called weekly gears, where every week we list games/movies/technology we watched/played/experienced and post brief impressions on them! If we like a particular thing or we feel we need to rant, expect a deeper analysis in a later post. So far, here are my impressions on things:
EndWar Private Beta: Still so addicted to this game! The strategies and voice control are so appealing to me that I don’t think I can play another RTS without yelling “sitrep!”
Virtua Fighter 5: A Xbox 360 game I grabbed for 14 bucks off the used section at blockbuster. This is definitely a hardcore fighter’s game. Graphics are nice and presentation is fair. The main draw is THE most complex and deep fighting system I have ever played. There is no possible way for a button masher to win! I’m not even going to touch online play simply because I know I’m going to get raped.
Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull: WTF?! Seriously now, I think George Lucas should stop whatever he is smoking and stop mixing StarWars into Indiana Jones. I want whipalicous action, not some sci-fi corny wtf is that shit ending
Hancock: Excellent superhero movie if you can get past the absurd premise and wtf plot twist in the middle. Other than that, seriously who names themselves Hancock? Might as well have called himself Mancock.
Love-Guru: Ughh very hit or miss! I appreciate the hockey parts but *spoilers* I did not need to see two elephants going at it!
ATI HD4870:Well…. that was a very interesting GPU install….. no other impressions since the guy who bought it seems to think SIMS2 is a graphics intensive game.Later impressions when I actually see how it runs a REAL game
