Spore Sucks

September 5, 2008

Spore sucks as a game. Great ideas but not so much in execution. I wanted a sims like experience, not a  fricking myriad of gameplay form MMORPGs, RTSs, and thtat stupid eating fish flash game. Worst of all it can’t even manage to control as good as those games. That is all.

Guest Review: Devil May Cry 4

Devil May Cry 4-The Repetitiveness!!!

By Guneden

Since this game has been out for a while now, I won’t go over the game itself, but just point out
some things that were good or bad. If you want a full summary then go check the hundreds of reviews
done when this game first came out. Well first off, i have to say this is really repetitive, combat wise.
Although you can use the arm to pull some throws, mostly it is just mashing the triangle button to do slash
attacks. The option of using your gun is pretty useless, as the gun does around 1/20th the damage as the sword. What I was really disappointed at was the fact that the main lead, Nero, does NOT get any new weapons as you proceed through the story, so you are stuck with the tried and tested grab/slash combo for the entire time, at least for as long as you are using Nero. The second big disappointment was the return of Dante. I don’t mind if he appears as a cameo, but for some reason the creators decided to make him a playable character for the second part of the story. This is still ok, but having him visit the same dungeons and fight the same bosses as Nero is a bit repetitive. Kinda reminds me of Gundam Seed Destiny where the previous hero totally dominates the story over the new hero…(Screw Jesus Kira Yamato). Oh, and did I mention you have to fight the same bosses 3 times in total throughout the game? Also, it doesn’t help that the places you visit are similar to those in Resident Evil 4- first the village, then the castle, the secret lab…they have really run out of ideas haven’t they? On a side note, for some weird reason when the “savior” is activated I was instantly reminded of RahXephon… The only redeeming
factor in DMC4 is probably the weapons you get as Dante. Personally I find the gaunlet almost impossible to use as it is slow+extremely short range, but the other two are quite fun to use. One is this wing thing (no you still can’t fly) where you can throw multiple exploding short swords, and the other is my favorite Pandora’s Box, a 5 in 1 bowgun/rocket launcher/gatling gun/laser cannon/missile turret. Made of pure win. Too bad Nero doesn’t get anything…

Despite all the repetitiveness, DMC4 is still worth playing if you like spamming stlyish moves with just the press of a button. Probably it is better to rent or borrow from someone else since this is a short game (finished in around 10-12hours) and the replayability is quite low (you won’t want to fight that viper-dragon boss another 3 times).

Hey guys this is a follow up to Gunedens Soul Calibur Review a couple of days ago. I’ll only be briefly covering gameplay so please do look at his review for more insight. As an aside, all images were taken by my camera phone of the Xbox 360 limited edition. (sorry for the shoddy quality of some these images)

Soul Calibur 4 Guest Review

July 31, 2008

Hey guys, today’s review come courtesy from my friend guneden! Look forward to more of his posts in the future!

Soul Calibur 4 (PS3 version) review
by Guneden (Gun-Eden)

Soooo…after playing like 4 hours of this game i gotta say its “not as good as it could’ve been”. The first thing i noticed was the use of in-game graphics for the opening, which is not quite what i expected, as the in-game graphics arnt superb considering it IS ps3….plus its extremely short, showing random people that have nothing to do with each other whatsoever facing off against each other (darth vader meeting Mitsurugi in the middle of a volcano area? (What the heck?)  If u guys are wondering…NO lightsabers cannot chop through katanas in this game just cause bandai namco says so. Anyways i proceeded with story mode (not like theres any story to begin with and its so made-up complicated anyways) and found instead of the 9-stage somewhat coherent story we get in SC3, it has been chopped to 5 consecutive battles with a little cutscene at the end. Not that im complaining, cause who cares about the SC storyline anyways? (if you’re interested i’ll just sum it up to “everyone beats the crap out of either knightmare, Algol, or Siegfried and gets the soul edge/calibur”)
Unfortunately for me, they have taken away the long strategy rpg thing from SC3 and replaced it with a survival tower of sorts, with the option of ascending or descending.

A tale of Souls, Swords and….boobs?

July 29, 2008

So… Soul Calibur 4 has been released today. Having owned Soul Calibur 2 and 3 (not the first games; my gaming history is not that long), I’ve come to know and love the characters and gameplay of this franchise. I’ve played some other fighting games such as Tekken, Dead or Alive, and Virtua Fighter, but none come close to Soul Calibur in my opinion (Tekken = PS3 Exclusive; DoA = frustrating; VF = wtf complicated). Although the newest iteration of Soul Calibur is packed with goodies, the most surprising upgrades I’ve noticed are the characters themselves – especially the females. Ivy Valentine, for example, is the notorious chain-whip-wielding character whose top-heavy figure would put a porn star to shame. That was in Soul Calibur 2 and 3. Now, Namco (the developer) has decided that her chest was too small and ballooned the size of her D-cups to a… well, I don’t know bra sizes too well but they’re pretty damn big. The same goes for other characters Taki, Setsuka, etc. who have also undergone miraculous transformations – since when did plastic surgeons exist hundreds of years ago?

Personally, I don’t mind a few tweaks here and there, but these boob jobs seem a little impractical given how much these characters move and jump around (extreme breast physics?) but in the end, we all know that sex sells. I still haven’t played the new game however, so my opinion on this matter may change later on :)

Weekly Gears ~ 1 week anniversary edition

July 12, 2008

Wow, this blog is already 1 week old and I haven’t gotten around to update the site with any major content. Since I’ve been busy this entire week I haven’t gotten around to play any new games or watch movies. Next week looks even more hectic but hopefully I’ll be able to find some time to get this blog in order (especially after gentek’s little “departing” raid).  Weekly Gears is a continuously evolving segment and because I didn’t play/watch any games this week, instead I’ll post interesting news around the tech/gaming industry.

DX 11 announced, DX 10.1 sinks http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/38362/98/ : ATI fanboys am cry, DX 10.1 is the past and I for one welcome our new DX 11 overlords. Nvidia actually made a smart decision here to not support the dx 10.1 in their next gen cards (GTX260/80)

Nvidia stumbles Source : Wow gentek is going to have a field day with this, hopefully anyone using NV’s mobile GPU’s will be fine. My go7600 is still going strong after almost a yr and a half so I’m still a happy customer. Apparently this problem affects mainly the go 8 series.

Weekly Gears

July 4, 2008

Welcome to the section called weekly gears, where every week we list games/movies/technology we watched/played/experienced and post brief impressions on them! If we like a particular thing or we feel we need to rant, expect a deeper analysis in a later post. So far, here are my impressions on things:

  • EndWar Private Beta: Still so addicted to this game! The strategies and voice control are so appealing to me that I don’t think I can play another RTS without yelling “sitrep!”
  • Virtua Fighter 5: A Xbox 360 game I grabbed for 14 bucks off the used section at blockbuster. This is definitely a hardcore fighter’s game. Graphics are nice and presentation is fair. The main draw is THE most complex and deep fighting system I have ever played. There is no possible way for a button masher to win! I’m not even going to touch online play simply because I know I’m going to get raped.
  • Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull: WTF?! Seriously now, I think George Lucas should stop whatever he is smoking and stop mixing StarWars into Indiana Jones. I want whipalicous action, not some sci-fi corny wtf is that shit ending
  • Hancock: Excellent superhero movie if you can get past the absurd premise and wtf plot twist in the middle. Other than that, seriously who names themselves Hancock? Might as well have called himself Mancock.
  • Love-Guru: Ughh very hit or miss! I appreciate the hockey parts but *spoilers* I did not need to see two elephants going at it!
  • ATI HD4870:Well…. that was a very interesting GPU install….. no other impressions since the guy who bought it seems to think SIMS2 is a graphics intensive game.Later impressions when I actually see how it runs a REAL game
